North Carolina is the 9th most populous state in the US. It joined the Confederacy during the Revolutionary War despite considerable pro-Union support among its residents. The state’s nickname is "The Tar Heel State," presumed to originate from North Carolina’s extensive tar industry that was critical to its economy early in its development. More recently, the state’s economy is shifting towards knowledge-based enterprises such as biotechnology and pharmaceuticals. North Carolina's most populous city Charlotte is the second largest banking center in the US, only surpassed by New York City. The state also has a substantial tourism income.
